Abstract

This investigation presents the performance of Galvanized rebars in inhibitor admixed concrete exposed to accelerated corrosion conditions. Impressed voltage test and Macrocell corrosion test were conducted to investigate the infl uence of corrosion inhibitor on the performance of galvanized rebars. It is concluded that there is a drastic reduction in cracking resistance time for galvanized rebars in inhibitor admixed concrete irrespective of type of rebar and coating damage. The Failure mechanism of galvanized rebar in the inhibitor admixed concrete under highly accelerated electrochemical corrosion conditions was established. It was also found that there is an appreciable reduction in macrocell current for galvanized CTD and TMT bars in inhibitor admixed concrete irrespective of the coating damage as compared to control concrete. The coating damage of 1% did not signifi cantly reduce the corrosion resistance properties of galvanized rebars. It was emphasized that usage of corrosion inhibitor along with protective coating needs thorough investigation for their compatibility in the concrete environment. Galvanized TMT bars showed better performance as compared to galvanized CTD bars.
